   It was not long before reverses came. Babylon was besieged by Cyrus, nephew of Darius the Mede, and commanding general of the combined armies of the Medes and Persians. But within the seemingly impregnable fortress, with its massive walls and its gates of brass, protected by the river Euphrates, and stocked with provision in abundance, the voluptuous monarch felt safe and passed his time in mirth and revelry. { PK 523.1}   Read entire Chapter 43

  Those who proclaim the third angel’s message, must put on the whole armor of God, that they may stand boldly at their post in the face of detraction and falsehood, fighting the good fight of faith. They are to resist the enemy with the word, “It is written.” They are to keep themselves where the three great powers of heaven— the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit— can be their efficiency. These powers work with the one who gives himself unreservedly to God. The strength of heaven is at the command of God’s believing ones. The man who makes God his trust is barricaded by an impregnable wall.  { ST May 10, 1910, par. 11 }  { SW February 23, 1904, par. 3 }

  In the reign of Herod, Jerusalem had not only been greatly beautified, but by the erection of towers, walls, and fortresses, adding to the natural strength of its situation, it had been rendered apparently impregnable. He who would at this time have foretold publicly its destruction, would, like Noah in his day, have been called a crazed alarmist. But Christ had said: "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words shall not pass away." Matthew 24:35. Because of her sins, wrath had been denounced against Jerusalem, and her stubborn unbelief rendered her doom certain.  {GC 26.1}  Read entire Chapter 1

  As the arguments from the prophetic periods were found to be impregnable, opposers endeavored to discourage investigation of the subject by teaching that the prophecies were sealed. Thus Protestants followed in the steps of Romanists. While the papal church withholds the Bible ( see Appendix ) from the people, Protestant churches claimed that an important part of the Sacred Word -- and that the part which brings to view truths specially applicable to our time -- could not be understood.  {GC 340.2}  Read entire Chapter 18

   "When the soul surrenders itself to Christ, a new power takes possession of the new heart. A change is wrought which man can never accomplish for himself.  It is a supernatural work, bringing a supernatural element into human nature. The soul the is yielded to Christ becomes His own fortress, which He holds in a revolted world, and He intends that no authority shall be known in it but His own. The soul that is kept in possession by the heavenly agencies is impregnable to the assults of Satan. But unless we do yield ourselves to the control of Christ, we shall be dominated by the wicked one. We must inevitable be under the control of the one or the other of the two great powers that are contending for the supremacy of the world. It is not necessary for us deliberately to choose the service of the kingdom of darkness in order to come under its dominion. We have only to neglect to ally ourselves to the kingdom of light. If we do not co-operate with the heavenly agenciesSatan will take possession of the heart, and will make it his abiding place. The only defense against evil is the indwelling of Christ in the heart through faith in His righteousness. Unless we become vitally connected with God, we can never resist the unhallowed effects of self-love; self-indulgence and temptation to sin. We may leave off many bad habits, for the time we may part company with Satan; but without a vital connection to Him moment by moment, we shall be overcome. Without a personal acquaintance with Christ, and a continual communion, we are at the mercy of the enemy, and shall do his bidding in the end."   Desire of Ages, page 324, par. 1    Read entire chapter  33
